Over the next few months I am going to break down the barriers in a step-by-step guide to help navigate the process of buying art to decorate your home.

Confidence is the key word here. We are bombarded by so many images every day that we suffer from image fatigue. It’s hard to feel confidently when we don’t know where to begin. Today we can buy anything online so we now have the whole world of art to choose from. Galleries can be intimidating places so going to art fairs seems like a great alternative, but there too we can experience art overload. Which is why so often walls remain bare. And of course everybody has an opinion, so why don’t you?

One of the best places to start is at a local art museum. There will not be any pressure from gallery staff and the atmosphere is always calming. You will see the real thing and most of the time exhibitions have well written explanations accompanying the artwork. Because the art is not for sale there will be no impulse to imagine it in your home. Museums offer a great place to appreciate different periods in history and different mediums and styles.
Plus, most museums have great cafes so grab and friend and start looking.
